2nd place for Felix in Formula Renault NEZ debut

Henri Karjalainen crashed out on lap one - Ahvenisto is a difficult circuit

The wait is finally over! The first race of the Formula Renault North European Zone (NEZ) season was run today in Ahvenisto, Finland, with championship newcomer Felix Rosenqvist finishing in second place behind 20-year-old Team BS Motorsport team mate Daniel Roos. The major talking point this weekend has been the very unusual nature of the track, with blind crests and big gradient variations. The technically difficult layout led many to believe that the Swedish drivers, who both visit Ahvenisto for the first time, were going to find the running tough in comparison to those with more local knowledge - but the first three practice sessions on Friday made it obvious that Felix and Daniel were on front-running pace. Qualifying confirmed the tendency from earlier outings that the top three-four drivers were very equally matched, with Felix posting a time good enough for third - one tenth of a second from Pole - after finally managing to find some free space on the track following initial traffic problems. In the race itself, Felix and Roos both stormed past Pole-sitter Jukka Honkavuori to open up a comfortable gap to the rest of the field and secure a one-two for Team BS Motorsport. A solid start to the new campaign for Felix; but it could have ended a lot worse. A hole in the radiator made water temperatures reach dangerously high levels, forcing Felix to slow considerably at the end of the race to bring the car home. The team will rectify the problem overnight and Felix should have a healthy car again for tomorrow.

Tomorrow (Sunday), the final race of the weekend will take place with Felix on the front row of the grid in second place ahead of team mate Roos in third. The Formula Renault NEZ qualifying system means that beside the outright fastest lap - which of course determines the starting order for Race 1 - it's important to be consistently quick as the second-fastest lap shapes the Race 2 grid. For information and comments on tomorrow's results, please await the Felix Racing press release.
