New Shanghai Kart World track record - Alonso takes over from Felix

2008-10-15

It was Wednesday the 15th of October 2008. A normal day at the SIC Kart World. Then, strolling down the pit lane, came Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica...

Kubica is a close friend to SIC Kart World profile Davide de Gobbi, who was the Polish driver's team boss when they worked together at Prema Powerteam back in 2003. Kubica usually visits de Gobbi while in Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, but this year - to spice things up - he also brought his friend and competitor Fernando Alonso. Two-times Formula 1 World Champion Alonso came to the Shanghai Kart World fresh from two consecutive Grand Prix wins in Singapore and Japan, while Kubica remains in contention for the World Championship title following a strong second place at Fuji Speedway last weekend. Needless to say, it was a high-profile pair of drivers entering the top-modern karting facility (located just beside the famous Formula 1 circuit) to enjoy themselves in a couple of Tony Karts. Felix Rosenqvist, who has lived in Shanghai for about two months and drives for de Gobbi's Asian Formula Renault squad March3 Racing, was there to watch two of his greatest idols challenge his very own track record set earlier this year - and he was beaten by a mere 3/10 of a second by Fernando Alonso! According to reports, Kubica was a few hundredths too slow to reach Rosenqvist's time, but didn't seem to care about that at all, laughing and having as good a time as everyone else. The track was in good condition on the day and Felix will now have his work cut out in future laps of the SIC Kart World. Felix has done some karting back home in Sweden during the year as well, beating the track record at Scandinavian Kartway in Anderstorp in the process. If you ever pay the location a visit, remember to challenge Felix's time of 36.21 seconds to see if you can beat him!

With the next Formula Asia 2.0 race coincidentally taking place in Shanghai in about two weeks, Felix will try his best to regain his track record behind the wheel of the Tony Kart in the meantime. Having Alonso's time of 55.460s in close memory, however, it will not be easy to beat a double Formula 1 World Champion...
