Pre-season test 1: Barcelona | Day 1

FIA Formula 3 European Championship
Venue:
Circuit de Catalunya (Spain) | Date: 8th March 2013 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix completed a solid and trouble-free first day of testing ahead of the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign on Friday, as pre-season preparations got underway in earnest at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

The 28 drivers on site conducted a total of seven hours of running in magnificent Spanish sunshine, with activities divided into two sessions separated by a 60-minute lunch break. The morning was all about getting back up to speed following the winter, with Felix and Mücke Motorsport - now carrying a blue and orange livery to celebrate the start of the new season - conducting a series of systems checks and set-up evaluations as they ensured everything was running according to plan.

The afternoon marked similar progress, as Felix undertook a sequence of back-to-back runs to cross check tyre and chassis performance. The final 20 minutes of the day saw the majority of the field head out for a short stint on new Hankook tyres, with Felix eventually wounding up ninth - just 0.377s behind session pace-setter Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam) - as the competitiveness of the new-shape championship was demonstrated by a full 13 drivers ending up within half a second of each other around the 4.655 km lap.

The outright fastest time of the day, however, was set by Raffaele Marciello - another Prema Powerteam runner - in the cooler morning session.

Testing at Barcelona continues tomorrow, with weather forecasts again predicting blue skies and comfortable temperatures.

COMMENT | FELIX
"A solid start to the year. It was great to get back behind the wheel again following the winter break, and we completed our programme without any issues. It actually felt like I hadn't been out of the car at all, and I was able to get down to business straight away.

"We focussed on a series of set-up evaluations today and found some interesting things, but it's obviously way too early to say anything about the relative performance of the teams - lap times are not very representative at the moment. I wasn't particularly happy with the balance of the car - it has changed a bit since last year - but that's exactly what testing is for and we are here to try different things out. I am looking forward to continue that process tomorrow."
