Pre-season test 1: Barcelona | Day 2

FIA Formula 3 European Championship
Venue:
Circuit de Catalunya (Spain) | Date: 9th March 2013 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship grid completed the first official pre-season test of the year at Barcelona on Saturday, as Felix and Mücke Motorsport continued work on set-up and chassis refinements.

Felix ended up 16th and 18th respectively in the morning and afternoon sessions, posting a best time of 1m41.508s on his 23rd lap of the day. He was set for a clear improvement towards the end of the afternoon, but spun on a set of new tyres and decided to head back into the pits on a day when lap times again proved very close - but also highly unreliable as teams ran a series of different programmes in preparation for the new campaign.

Much like yesterday, Mücke Motorsport spent most of the day doing back-to-back comparisons on a range of new components. Felix amassed a total of 118 laps (65 on Friday and 53 on Saturday) over the course of the two days, which saw almost 30 drivers take to the track - 18 of them covered by one second on today's combined timesheets.

Pre-season testing concludes at Monza - the venue which is also set to host the opening race of the season - on March 18-19.

COMMENT | FELIX
"It is going to be extremely close this year. Testing is always testing and the pecking order will look different when we arrive at Monza, but even though the true relative performance of the teams is still impossible to judge, all the signs are there for a massively competitive season. We have been focussing on our own programme here at Barcelona and I think we've learned a lot over these two days of testing.

"For reasons we are currently investigating, the car feels a bit different to last year, and I spent quite some time trying to adapt my driving style accordingly today. My spin meant I wasn't able to set a representative lap time in the afternoon, but we have a good understanding of what to do between now and Monza and we have a lot of valuable data to analyse over the coming week. All-in-all, a solid start to the season."
