Felix opens Brands Hatch weekend with third in free practice

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 4
Brands Hatch (Great Britain) | Date: 17 May 2013 | Weather: Cloudy and chilly

By Mattias Persson

Felix kept himself close to the top of the timesheets throughout Friday free practice for this weekend's FIA Formula 3 European Championship round at Brands Hatch, as he went fastest in the first segment of the session and eventually wound up third overall.

Felix wasted no time in showing his intentions as practice went underway, topping the first part of the session as the sight of a massive 29 Formula 3 cars around the 1.9 km Brands Hatch Indy circuit proved absolutely fantastic - and very intense.

Following the usual five-minute break, the field continued to improve further in the second segment of practice, as the short lap leant itself towards exceptionally close times. Felix threw in a 41.348s effort in the dying moments of running, which was well within a tenth of overall pace-setter Lucas Auer - and just 0.02 seconds shy of championship rival Raffaele Marciello (both driving for Prema Powerteam).

Felix was a feature at the top of the timesheets throughout both sessions, again leading the Mücke Motorsport challenge.

With a full 18 cars lapping within half a second of each other in practice, this afternoon's qualifying sessions look set to offer a gigantic scrap for pole position. Qualifying, which will see the field split into two groups to counteract the heavy traffic, commences at 16.25 local time.

"Driving here is intense - but very fun! We seem to be in good shape for qualifying, but the times are extremely close and we will have to extract every hundredth of a second. The car feels good, and we are within a tenth of the Prema guys, so it should be an interesting afternoon."
