Felix fights Prema Powerteam to start Brands Hatch races from fifth

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 4
Venue:
Brands Hatch (Great Britain) | Date: 17 May 2013 | Weather: Cloudy, cold

By Mattias Persson

Felix will start all three of this weekend's FIA Formula 3 European Championship races from fifth place on the grid, after being part of a gigantic scrap for pole position in two hours of complicated - and disrupted - qualifying on Friday afternoon.

Felix came within a tenth of pole position as he ended up third in his group in the first segment of qualifying, beating the pace-setting time from the other group - posted by Raffaele Marciello - as he fought with the Italian's two Prema Powerteam stablemates Alex Lynn and Lucas Auer.

Despite beating Marciello's time, however, Felix will still be lining up fifth for tomorrow's first race, due to the system used to produce the respective grids in two-group qualifying. Utilising the same method for the second-fastest lap times, Felix will slot in on the same position on the grid for Race 2 - frustratingly losing out on pole by just 0.058 seconds as qualifying proved to be just as fierce as expected.

The second qualifying session was hit by a severe delay, as Felix's Mücke Motorsport team-mate Michael Lewis crashed horrifically at Paddock Hill Bend in the dying moments of the first group's outing. The American remained sat in his car for more than 20 minutes, before being retrieved and taken to the circuit medical centre. Lewis' condition remains unclear, although he is believed to be conscious.

Once Felix's group took to the track following the delay, the battle for Race 3 pole duly commenced, with Felix again ending up third behind Lynn - who will start all three races from the front of the field - and Auer. The "Felix Group" again went quicker than Marciello managed in Group 1, although this time - to demonstrate the extreme competitiveness of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship - by just one thousand of a second...

Race 1 gets underway tomorrow morning.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A very, very closely-fought session. First of all, I really want to wish Michael all the best in his recovery after the accident; it was a huge crash, and we all think about him and hope that he's as fine as he possibly can be.

"When it comes to the actual sessions, I have to admit that I couldn't have driven any faster today - this was my maximum. The few hundredths of a second we're lacking from pole is not anything I could have found, so I think this is genuinely where we are at this track. I went faster than Raffaele in the other group, and I think we can be happy with what we extracted. Congratulations to Alex on having grabbed pole on his home track; he did a good job, and he deserves to be up front.

"Now, it will be vital to do some good starts again this weekend, and then we'll see what we can do from there. I think we have taken a step forwards with our whole package, and I can't wait to try and challenge the Prema guys again in the races."
