Felix takes fourth behind Prema trio in Race 1

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 4
Venue:
Brands Hatch (Great Britain) | Date: 18 May 2013 | Weather: Cloudy

By Mattias Persson

Felix finished the first race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend at Brands Hatch in fourth, as he improved one place from his P5 grid slot to cross the line behind a trio of Prema Powerteam cars – and as the highest-ranked runner from outside the Italian champion outfit.

Getting away well off the line, Felix was involved in a huge scrap for third with Lucas Auer and Sven Müller into the Druids hairpin, from which he got out in fourth – behind Müller, but ahead of Auer.

As expected on the short and flowing Brands Hatch Indy configuration, the race then settled in more or less instantly. A slight mistake from Felix halfway through, however, saw Auer nip past and into fourth, a position then inherited by Felix when Müller’s ma-con car developed a problem and forced the German into retirement.

As such, Felix came home fourth behind Prema’s squadron of cars, on a weekend when the Italian outfit seems to have found a highly effective set-up around the British venue. Fifth-placed Harry Tincknell, meanwhile, finished a full 13 seconds behind Felix.

Race 2 gets underway later this afternoon.

QUOTE | FELIX
“A tough and intense race – just as we expected. I made an OK start, but it then got very tight into Druids and I was riding on top of the inside kerb for a while before eventually coming out of it all in fourth. I then felt comfortably quicker than Sven ahead of me, but made a mistake at Turn 3 that unfortunately enabled Lucas to get past.

“I think I was actually faster than him as well, but it’s so difficult to overtake around here and there wasn’t much I could do. I’m quite happy with having improved on my starting position to finish fourth, but we’re still lacking some pace compared to Prema and I don’t think they are 1-2-3 out of chance. We will go through all our data and try to do an even better job in Race 2 this afternoon, and I’m feeling rather confident.”
