Felix becomes Champion after dramatic Shanghai race!

With three races still to go of this year's Formula Asia 2.0 season, Felix Rosenqvist today secured his first international single-seater championship by finishing in second place behind race winner Rio Haryanto in Shanghai - a result good enough to claim the title as Mathias Beche crashed out in an incident with Yuki Iwasaki on Lap 1 and had to see all hopes of becoming Champion disappear. Qualifying had been pretty straightforward, but Felix was lucky to start from second on the grid despite losing some track time following a blown engine halfway through the session. Pole Position then duly went to Beche - the only driver who had been able to run within a second of Felix in pre-race practice, when times had been in the region of 1m46.2s in advantageous weather conditions - and the fight for the title looked set to be tough. At the start, however, Swiss Beche got off the line considerably worse than Felix who catapulted into the lead going into Turn 1 and opened up a gap to everyone but Rio Haryanto, who had good speed down the main straight in his ART car. At the same time, Felix's replacement engine revved some 700 rpm's lower than normal, giving Haryanto the possibility to overtake the March3 Racing car. Further back, Iwasaki collided with Ryan Haryanto, forcing both to retire. The Safety Car was called out, allowing Felix an easy drive to second at the finish line and overall championship victory. This is the first time ever that an Asian Formula Renault title has been won by a Swedish driver, and www.felixracing.se would like to thank all of Felix's fans for your support throughout 2008 - and hope that today's result pays you back in the best possible way!
