Felix caught out in interrupted qualifying session

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES / FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Brands Hatch (Great Britain) | Date: May 18th, 2012 | Weather: Cloudy, intermittent rain

By Mattias Persson

Felix's recent qualifying luck did not take a turn for the better at Brands Hatch, as a sequence of events - including a red flag, a deleted lap time and a late shower of rain - caught the Mücke Motorsport man out in the grid-deciding session on Friday afternoon.

Qualifying began on a dry track, but - just as many had foreseen - traffic soon turned out to be just as problematic as expected at the 1.9 km venue. Felix initially held second place, but soon fell back as he couldn't make a host of attempts to find a clear lap work.

With two minutes left on the clock, Felix held sixth place and had just set a series of fast laps when Luis Sá Silva crashed heavily at Paddock Hill Bend. The session was stopped just as Felix crossed the line to complete yet another improvement, but the time was set a few seconds after the red flag came out and Felix duly had to see his best lap cancelled by the stewards. Instead, he returned to the pitlane in eighth place on the outright charts, and once the session was re-started, rain effectively ruined any possibility to improve.

The unlucky events of qualifying mean that Felix will start tomorrow's Race 1 from sixth on the grid following a five-place grid penalty for second-row qualifier Will Buller, and Sunday's concluding Race 3 from eighth. Championship rival Daniel Juncadella claimed Pole Position for both races.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A big, big disappointment. This was exactly what I wasn't aiming for, particularly coming off the back of our strong practice form this morning. Unfortunately, however, I repeated the events of Pau last weekend, where I also failed to find a clear lap and - once I did - couldn't make use of what is much better pace than this to claim a decent spot on the grid. You can't really affect things such as red flags or stoppages, but I'm still not happy with myself and we are now facing another uphill struggle tomorrow. Overtaking will be massively difficult around here, but I will definitely never, ever give up and will try to do my best from the position I'm now in."
