Felix goes fifth in FP2 before crashing as rain intensifies

Date: August 13th, 2011
Venue: Zandvoort (the Netherlands)
Weather: Dry/wet

Felix posted the fifth-fastest time in second practice at Zandvoort this morning, but had to see his running cut short by a crash in the ultra-fast Mastersbocht section on the back of the circuit as he brought out the red flags with ten minutes left of the session.

Felix lost control of his Mücke Motorsport Dallara at about 180 km/h and hit the wall on the exit of the corner, damaging the front and left-hand side of his car in the impact. The team is currently working on retrieving the car from the circuit, as the mechanics now face a race against time to get Felix back out in time for qualifying this afternoon.

Carlos Munoz was another man to hit problems in the session, as the Colombian crashed at the Hugenholtz corner early on.

The session began in heavily overcast yet dry conditions, but was hit by rain halfway through. Just before his crash - which came as the rain began to intensify - Felix had been posting promising lap times and hauled himself to fifth overall, a position he kept despite his accident to eventually end up one second adrift of ultimate pace-setter Roberto Merhi (1m31.904s). Felix's best effort was a 1m32.937s.

The RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 qualifying format sees two 30-minute sessions take place - both this afternoon - with drivers free to complete as much running as they like in their pursuit of outright one-lap performance. The grid for Sunday's 25-lap race will be set up by the best time posted by each driver in any of the two qualifying sessions.
