Felix playing catch up after being hit in free practice

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES / FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Norisring (Germany) | Date: June 29th, 2012 | Weather: Very warm, sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix was forced to sit out much of the opening part of Friday free practice at the Norisring, after being hit by American Michael Lewis just 15 minutes into the session - but an heroic effort from the Mücke Motorsport mechanics meant he could get back out on track for the final hour of running.

The collision took place when Lewis lost control of his Prema Powerteam machine under braking for Turn 1 and torpedoed Felix from behind. The resulting damage to Felix's car meant that he was unable to get back out on track for the remainder of the first hour, losing valuable set-up time on a circuit where acclimatisation is possibly more important than anywhere else.

The Mücke Motorsport mechanics, though, made an astonishing job to get Felix back out only minutes into the concluding hour of action. The Lewis incident, however, meant that Felix was always going to play catch up with his rivals as he set about trying to get into the groove at the highly technical Nuremberg street venue. Having found himself in traffic for most of the session, Felix eventually wound up 20th fastest - 0.7s behind pace-setter Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam).

This afternoon's qualifying session begins at 16.15 local time.

COMMENT | FELIX
"Not a perfect start to the weekend for us, but at least I was lucky to get back out for the final hour - and that was massively important. I really have to thank the team for making a great job repairing the car after the clash with Michael. We've been put on the back foot due to what happened, and I haven't been able to get as good a feel under braking as I'd have wanted going into qualifying. My sector times, however, are much better than my final time suggests, so I don't think our genuine pace will place us P20. We now have to keep working and focus on qualifying, and then we'll see how things transpire there."
