Felix returns to the Formula 3 Euro Series podium

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES
Venue:
Nürburgring (Germany) | Date: August 18th, 2012 | Weather: Sunny, warm

By Mattias Persson

Felix produced an emphatic drive to the podium in the second Formula 3 Euro Series race of the weekend at the Nürburgring, coming home third after a solid drive from fifth on the partially reversed grid.

Felix immediately overtook Jazeman Jaafar's Carlin car off the grid, and went on to put Red Bull-backed Carlos Sainz Jr. under intense pressure for third place during the opening few laps. Visibly faster than his rival, Felix launched an attack on the Spaniard going into Turn 1 on lap three, but the move didn't quite stick and Felix was forced to remain behind. He didn't have to wait long until finally grabbing third, though, as Sainz Jr. was handed a drive-through penalty for a pre-race infringement.

Once in free air, Felix proved to be the fastest driver on the track and set about closing the gap to second-placed Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam). The Italian held firm, however, and Felix duly took the chequered flag in third place.

Felix's pace was further underlined by the fact that he posted the second-fastest lap of the race - despite starting the event on a set of used tyres. Only race winner Alexander Sims managed to lap the 3.629 km venue quicker than Felix, but Sims' status as a guest driver for this weekend means that Marciello inherits the full ten points for victory, with Felix effectively taking second behind the Italian.

Championship leader Daniel Juncadella wound up eighth, in a race which counted only towards Formula 3 Euro Series and where no points were handed out for the FIA European F3 Championship.

The final race of the weekend takes place at 11.15 local time tomorrow, and will see Felix start from second on the grid as a result of his performance in Friday qualifying.

COMMENT | FELIX
"A very good race for us. We had seriously strong pace, and it feels great to be back on the podium. Just as I went about trying to pass Sainz Jr. for third, I found out that he had been given a drive-through penalty, but I still wanted to get past him as Pascal (Wehrlein) was quite close behind me. It got a bit messy when we went side-by-side into Turn 1, but fortunately nothing happened. I will start from the front row tomorrow, and I will do everything I can to try and bag another podium."
