Felix tops practice as final round of 2013 gets underway

By Mattias Persson

Felix got the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship finale at Hockenheim off to the strongest possible start by going fastest in Friday free practice at the German venue.

Felix's benchmark best of 1m33.692s came in the first of the two sessions, and gave him an edge of 0.095s over second-placed Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam). Lynn's stablemate Raffaele Marciello, who heads Felix by 45.5 points in the race for the title going into the weekend, wound up sixth overall - 0.297s off the outright pace of his Mücke Motorsport rival.

The second session was compromised by persistent yellow flags in the Motodrom, brought out when guest entrant and GP2 regular Stefano Coletti spun off and beached his ma-con Motorsport Dallara in the gravel trap. Coletti, who is currently in with an outside shot at grabbing the GP2 title going into next month's Abu Dhabi finale, endured a challenging FIA Formula 3 European Championship berth and ended up 20th - almost 1.3 seconds slower than Felix.

The second series rookie - GP3 frontrunner Kevin Korjus - went 17th fastest for ThreeBond with T-Sport.

The all-important qualifying sessions, which will set up the trio of grids ahead of the championship showdown, will shoot into the limelight at 16.25 local time this afternoon.

QUOTE | FELIX
"An OK start, but we still have a few things to fine tune. We have to make sure we bring our set-up in line with the way the track develops between now and qualifying - there will be a lot of rubber going down from the other series this afternoon. The car felt very strong in the first session, but the second one was obviously compromised by that yellow flag - and I never got a new-tyre run in. Considering that, we look relatively strong, and we will now do everything we can to maintain this form as we head into qualifying."
