Felix grabs Hockenheim pole as title rivals produce qualifying lock-out

By Mattias Persson

Felix has bagged pole position for tomorrow's second FIA Formula 3 European Championship race at Hockenheim, and will start all of this weekend's three events from the front row of the grid - alongside championship rival Raffaele Marciello.

The two title protagonists blitzed qualifying ahead of the 2013 season-finale, with Marciello grabbing pole for Race 1 by just nine hundredths of a second from Felix - who looked set to haul himself ahead of the Italian on a late charge only to lose time in traffic (interestingly in the form of Marciello) in the final sector.

For Race 2, however, Felix came out on top, edging his Prema Powerteam adversary by 0.081s.

Marciello then fought back once again in the second qualifying session to grab first spot by 0.068s from Felix, as the rest of the field were left picking up the pieces behind.

The other three Mücke Motorsport drivers had to make do with less promising grid slots, lapping between 0.8 and 1.1 seconds slower than Felix throughout the sessions.

The outcome of qualifying sets up a head-to-head battle between the two title rivals, with Felix effectively having to beat Marciello in tomorrow's first race (unless they both fail to finish outside the points) to keep his championship hopes alive.

Race 1 gets underway tomorrow morning.

QUOTE | FELIX

"I think I got almost everything out of the car today - and three front row grid slots is a strong outcome. Having said that, though, I think I could have been on pole for Race 1 as well, if I hadn't come across Raffaele in the final sector. I had just gone purple, purple through sectors one and two, so it was a shame to end up second - although it still gives me every chance of fighting for victory.

"My goal now is to simply beat Raffaele in all of the races, and then the rest will be down to factors outside of my control. It will be interesting starting alongside him tomorrow, and I think the stage is set for quite some interesting racing!"
