Felix takes close second in wet 2013 finale - and sets another fastest lap

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 10
Venue:
Hockenheim (Germany) | Date: 20 October 2013 | Weather: Heavy rain

By Mattias Persson

Felix brought the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season to a close by finishing second in the third and final race of the weekend at Hockenheim, breaking away with pole-sitter Raffaele Marciello and putting the Italian under severe pressure despite suffering from limited visibility behind his Prema Powerteam rival.

The race got underway behind the safety car, and in very poor conditions. Once the field was released at the end of lap four, immense amounts of spray instantly shot into the air as the cars and tyres threw up water from the tarmac, making visibility virtually non-existent for those behind Marciello.

Felix, however, managed to keep the gap to the Italian at around one-two seconds, as the duo immediately started to pull away from the chasing pack. Following another safety car period, Felix upped the pressure on Marciello further still, eventually crossing the line just two tenths of a second behind the 2013 champion as the top two again proved to have a clear edge over the rest of the field.

For the third time running this weekend, Felix set the fastest lap of the race (some four tenths quicker than Marciello), and capped the season off with his 18th podium of the campaign.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A tough, but fun race. Visibility was very poor in the spray behind Raffaele, but I at least managed to keep up with him - even though I couldn't quite get close enough on the straights to truly attack him. I felt quite a lot faster than him today and I think I could have managed to pull away if I'd got past, but he drove strongly throughout. I went for a final push on the final lap and got very, very close, but it just wasn't quite enough for victory on this occasion.

"I think it was fitting to end the season like this - with a head-to-head battle with Raffaele. With two wins, a second place and three fastest laps this weekend, our pace has hopefully been there for everyone to see, and it's great to have capped the season off in this manner. We go away from here with some very strong results, and we have to be proud of what we've achieved this year. Big thanks to the entire team at Mücke Motorsport for a great season, and to all of my fans and followers who have offered some truly fantastic support in good times and in bad."
