Felix completes opening Grand Prix de Pau practice session

FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Pau (France) | Date: May 11th, 2012 | Weather: Sunny and warm

By Mattias Persson

Felix enjoyed a promising start to the Grand Prix de Pau by going sixth fastest overall - and third in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship cluster of drivers - in the opening free practice session on Friday morning, as he began to acquaint himself with the hazards of the French street circuit.

Racing in Pau for the very first time this weekend, Felix's main task in the 45-minute session was to improve his understanding of the highly demanding city-centre venue. Those who ever doubted the challenges of Pau were proved wrong just ten minutes into practice, when Australian Geoff Uhrhane brought out the red flags after taking to the escape road at Turn 1.

When running resumed, former British Formula Renault 2.0 champion Tom Blomqvist was the next man to run into trouble, crashing on the exit of the infamous Virage Foch complex. In true street circuit-style, however, the marshals proved highly efficient and removed Blomqvist's stricken ma-con Motorsport machine without having to stop the session.

With 24 cars on track - a result of the British F3 Series joining the action this weekend - Felix was one of several drivers unable to complete a lap in free air. In order to get around that problem for tomorrow's all-important qualifying session, organisers have decided to split that session into two halves, dividing the field into two groups which will each get 15 minutes of track time.

Joining Luis Derani and Jazeman Jaafar in an exclusive trio of drivers who have actually raced around the streets of Pau in Formula 3 before, Daniel Juncadella topped the session ahead of Jack Harvey in second and Jaafar in third. Felix wound up just over half a second off Juncadella's benchmark, in what effectively gives him third place on the FIA European F3 Championship timesheets when discounting the British F3 Series regulars.

The second free practice session of the day is set to start at 15.30.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A good, solid start to the weekend. I quickly got into the groove and have got a positive feeling behind the wheel. I was on a faster lap towards the end of the session, but ran into traffic and had to abort it. Pau is a very intense circuit and there will definitely be a lot of action here this weekend. It's still early days, but things have been working fine for us so far and I'm looking forward to learning more about the track this afternoon."
