REPORT RACE 1

Sunset over Karlskoga

Felix controlled the race

Returning to the track after a four-week summer break, the Formula Renault Sweden championship was welcomed back into the frame with beautiful weather conditions as racing resumed at Gelleråsen, Karlskoga, today. Felix Rosenqvist showed no signs of having forgotten his race craft, comfortably topping the morning practice session half a second ahead of the rest of the field. In the meantime, Team BS Motorsport team-mate Daniel Roos suffered a big crash following throttle problems just a handful of laps into the session. His car was rebuilt in time for qualifying, but Felix continued to have the upper hand and put himself on Pole Position with a time of 1m01.556s, followed by Roos and an on-form Tom Blomqvist. As Felix also set the second-fastest qualifying lap, he will start from the front of the grid tomorrow as well.

Friday's Race 1 soon developed into a by-now classic "Rosenqvist vs. Roos" feud, with Felix leading ahead of Daniel for the first couple of laps. Roos soon disappeared with a driveshaft failure, however, highlighting a tough day for the championship contender and giving Felix a smooth run to the chequered flag. As people went about congratulating Rosenqvist on his first Formula Renault Sweden win of the season, the Stewards of the Meeting decided to hand Felix a 30-second time penalty for what was referred to as dangerous driving in front of a track marshal while on the way to the starting grid*. As a result, Rosenqvist - who would have strengthened his championship lead with the original result - fell to seventh in the race classification, not participating in the podium ceremony. Victory instead went to former World Rally champion Stig Blomqvist's son Tom Blomqvist, who had been some ten seconds behind Felix on the road. Team BS Motorsport (Felix's team) has appealed the penalty, and a final statement on the matter remains to be officially issued. Consequently, the race results and championship table are preliminary. We will provide more information as and when it becomes available.

*Late on Friday night, the Stewards of the Meeting admitted to having taken a wrong decision and handed the race win back to Felix. As a result, Rosenqvist increases his championship lead and has now scored his first triple of the season with Pole Position, fastest lap and a victory on the very same day.
