Felix increases pace to go 11th in heavily delayed practice

MACAU GRAND PRIX 2010

After slowly but surely continuing to learn about the unique features of the Guia street circuit, Felix ended today's heavily delayed free practice session for the Macau Grand Prix in 11th place on the timesheets.

The session didn't begin until two hours after its scheduled start time, following a seemingly never-ending crash fest in a preceding Macau Road Sport Challenge qualifying run.

Felix joined the rest of the field out onto the circuit as soon as the red light at the end of the pitlane turned green, and then steadily worked his way through a trouble-free programme of running - which involved trying to dial out the severe understeering tendencies that plagued him yesterday. Felix eventually wound the session up with a best time of 2m13.680s - just 1.2 seconds off Signature's Marco Wittmann in third place.

The session was stopped for a few minutes when Rio Haryanto crashed into the wall at R Bend, bringing out the red flags. The track marshals, fresh from the practice they received during the incident-filled morning in some of the support classes, quickly removed Haryanto's car and practice could resume without too much of added delay.

Alexander Sims, James Calado, Hideki Yamauchi and Carlos Munoz also made contact with the walls, but - despite the drivers in question having to abandon their cars - the incidents were not severe enough to interrupt the session.

FELIX'S COMMENT
“I feel like this circuit is really coming to me now; I finally began to really push a bit, and it's great that we seem to be on a pretty decent pace. I still couldn't come away from the understeering problems, but it was much better than yesterday and we'll take what we just learned into qualifying this afternoon. I am confident that we will only get faster and faster from now on, but I still need to have a bit of a margin and make sure I don't hit the walls. After all, this weekend is all about learning as much as possible for the future.”
