Mücke Motorsport chasing improvement after delayed Zandvoort practice

Zandvoort (the Netherlands) | Date: August 24th, 2012 | Weather: Overcast

By Mattias Persson

Mücke Motorsport endured a less-than-perfect start to this weekend's Formula 3 Euro Series and FIA European F3 Championship round at Zandvoort, as the Berlin squad struggled for grip during a delayed and shortened free practice session on Friday morning.

Practice had to be moved forward by almost an hour following issues with the track ahead of the session, as winds brought in sand from the surrounding North Sea dunes and made conditions difficult to drive in. Once action got underway, organisers had decided to cut running short by ten minutes in an attempt to try and claw back some of the lost time.

Felix began the session in promising style, heading to the top of the timesheets already on his first flying lap. However, a gearbox issue meant that Felix ended up in the gravel trap at Bocht 7 half an hour into running, as he was unable to downshift properly on the entry to the corner. With his Mücke Motorsport machine beached in the run-off area, Felix was forced to sit out 20 minutes of activity before his car could be retrieved and towed back to the pits for the final half of practice.

The majority of the best laps came as the drivers headed out on new tyres towards the end of the session. With Mücke Motorsport struggling for general grip – just one week on from having set the pace at the Nürburgring last weekend – Felix eventually wound up with the eighth-fastest time; 0.6s behind pace-setter Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam). Team-mate Pascal Wehrlein was 10th overall, two tenths down on Felix – but qualifying this afternoon remains an open affair for everyone with lap times again proving close.

Due to his off in the first half of practice, Felix completed less laps than any other driver in the session.

With all Friday activities at Zandvoort affected by the early morning delays, F3 qualifying has been slightly rescheduled and will now take place at 17.05 – 35 minutes later than originally planned.

"Unfortunately, that was not a great session for us. We looked strong initially, but then we hit all sorts of trouble. I lost 20 minutes of driving when I went off due to the issue with the gearbox in the first half of running, but I've driven a lot at Zandvoort and that wasn't such a major blow. The real problem is the feeling of the car with a lack of both front and rear grip, and we have a lot of work to do ahead of qualifying. My team-mate and I seem to be having the same issues, but it's quite close throughout the list and hopefully we can improve sufficiently between now and this afternoon."
