Felix to start from row two on Sunday despite messy qualifying outing

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 3
Venue:
Hockenheim (Germany) | Date: 3 May 2013 | Weather: Rain/drying

FIA Formula 3 European Championship qualifying at Hockenheim turned into an untidy and confused affair, with Felix set to start this weekend's trio of races from 12th, tenth and fourth respectively following some fluctuating results in the two segments of the session.

The story of qualifying will not go down as one of the most straightforward of the season, with the frenzied activities getting underway in a drizzle of light rain. It was not enough to necessitate the use of wet-weather tyres, but it inevitably added a further touch of drama as the 30-car field set out to do battle.

For Felix, Q1 would turn into disappointment, as he found himself frustratingly stuck in traffic for a large proportion of the session. By the time he got loose, his tyres were already way past their best and Felix had to make do with 12th overall (his position on the grid for tomorrow’s Race 1) – still just seven tenths adrift of pole as the incredible level of competition in the European Championship again proved its point. On second-fastest times, which are used to set up the grid for Race 2, Felix wound up tenth.

Following the usual 15-minute break, Qualifying 2 marked a new opportunity for Felix to truly show his worth – and he did so by immediately joining the fight for pole position. More lucky with traffic this time around, he increased his pace lap by lap, lighting up the monitors to post the day’s fastest time in the technical Motodrom section (sector three) on a lap which eventually would give him P4 on the grid for Sunday’s Race 3. An off at Turn 1 just moments later, however, meant he was denied any chance of improving further as he had to sit out the session on the sidelines.

Astonishingly, 13 (!) drivers were covered by less than half a second in Qualifying 2, with Felix ending up 0.169s adrift of pole position.

Felix once again out-qualified all of his Mücke Motorsport team-mates, but did lose ground to championship leader Raffaele Marciello who bagged a set of double pole positions for Races 1 and 2. The Italian’s pace then suddenly dropped off for Q2, however, where he wound up tenth.

Race 1 gets underway at 11.10 tomorrow morning.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A challenging day, but we will keep fighting. Qualifying 1 was one of those sessions where everything went wrong, and the sort of outing you just want to forget. I tried to back off and build a gap to the guy in front several times, but whenever I did, they would just back off themselves further around the lap and I couldn't get a clear lap in when the tyres were at their best. It was a pity, but at least our pace is better than our starting positions would indicate tomorrow, and we will see what we can do from 12th and tenth.

"In Q2, things went better until I spun, but I had to push extremely hard to do the time I did. I improved by almost a second compared to Q1, which proves what we were truly capable of today, and I do have a good slot on the grid on Sunday. I will do all I can to get away with as many points as possible tomorrow, but I'm not going to lie: we have a difficult job on hand."
