Felix tops final European F3 practice session of 2012

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES / FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Hockenheim (Germany) | Date: October 19th, 2012 | Weather: Sunny and dry

By Mattias Persson

Felix picked up where he left off at Valencia three weeks ago by going fastest in Friday morning free practice ahead of the Formula 3 Euro Series and FIA European F3 Championship finale at Hockenheim.

As expected, running took place in beautiful weather conditions, with blue skies and no sight of rain greeting the drivers as they toured onto the track at the start of the two-hour session. Felix was a feature at the top of the timesheets throughout, going into the customary five-minute break at the halfway point at the head of the list with a 1m34.735s best.

With the circuit getting hotter for the final hour, only a selection of drivers improved their times in the concluding part of the session, although Felix came close to his own benchmark with a 1m34.776s lap to top both segments of practice.

Carlos Sainz Jr. (Carlin) was second fastest, 0.163s down on Felix.

Felix's Mücke Motorsport team-mate Pascal Wehrlein, who celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday, wound up 13th overall - 0.684s slower than Felix - while regular GP2 driver Felipe Nasr (Carlin) went 14th on his return to Formula 3.

The session was stopped once, after the Stewards felt that drivers had been using the run-off area at the difficult Nordkurve (Turn 1) in an exaggerate manner; a re-occurring issue at Hockenheim. Race officials informed the drivers that at least two wheels have got to remain on the outside kerb throughout the corner, before the session could be restarted.

Qualifying is set to take place at 16.35 local time this afternoon.

COMMENT | FELIX
"A good start to the weekend, although I'm experienced enough to know that practice is practice and that things can look different in qualifying. However, we seem to be on the pace at the moment and the car felt OK from the first minute of the session. I wasn't particularly happy with my laps, though, and I think there are quite a few tenths to find for us; particularly in Sector 3 which I never really got together once we had pitted for new tyres. We will try to carry this form into qualifying and I think we have a good chance of doing that."
