Felix storms to double Hockenheim pole

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES / FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Hockenheim (Germany) | Date: October 19th, 2012 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix qualified on pole position for both the first and the final race of the weekend at Hockenheim, after a dominant performance on Friday afternoon that saw the Mücke Motorsport driver top the timesheets almost four tenths clear of the opposition.

After leading the way in free practice this morning, Felix went into qualifying as one of the favourites for pole position, and duly delivered one of the finest showings of 2012 to blitz his rivals with a series of ultra-fast laps in the dying minutes.

Felix had been on provisional pole at the halfway stage of the 30-minute session, but lap times - as usual - tumbled towards the end as Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) temporarily raised the bar with a 1m34.425s effort. Felix was able to comfortably edge back ahead of the Spanish championship leader on the final new-tyre runs, however, scoring the most convincing set of poles of the European F3 season as he banged in two near-identical laps in the 1m34.0s bracket (the outright fastest lap times counting towards the grid for Race 3, and the second-fastest ones towards Race 1).

The outcome will see Felix go into the final round of 2012 with further opportunities to extend his recent strike of victories at Zandvoort and Valencia.

Mücke Motorsport team-mate Pascal Wehrlein was third fastest on both charts. GP2 regular Felipe Nasr was 14th - 1.1 seconds off the leading pace set by Felix - as the F3 field once again proved why it is considered one of the strongest on the international single-seater arena.

COMMENT | FELIX
"I wasn't going to be happy with anything less than a double pole today; I just had to get it. We've had such bad luck this year that I really wanted to prove what I'm capable of in the final qualifying session here at Hockenheim, and it worked out well. The laps were very good, but when things run as smoothly as they've done today, you become somewhat of a perfectionist; and I think I could have found another tenth or two here and there.

"I'm obviously very happy with how things have gone so far - topping every single session today - but my focus has already shifted towards the races. I want to win again before the end of the year, and I have nothing to lose tomorrow."
