Felix tops Friday free practice at Macau

MACAU GRAND PRIX
Venue:
Guia Circuit (China) | Date: November 16th, 2012 | Weather: Overcast

By Mattias Persson

Felix continued his strong form on the streets of Macau by topping the charts in the second free practice session of the weekend on Friday morning - as less than two tenths of a second separated the top five around arguably the most challenging circuit in the world.

Running came to a halt almost before it had begun, with a broken fence forcing organisers to red flag the session just seconds after the lights turned green. Once action resumed, however, Felix wasted no time in shooting to the head of the timesheets, which he ultimately topped just fractions ahead of two recent Formula 1 testers - regular European F3 nemesis Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) and Portugal's António Félix da Costa (Carlin).

With Galaxy Double R Racing's Kevin Korjus and Félix da Costa's Carlin team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. shadowing the top three, the stage is set for what could turn into a gigantic battle for pole position in this afternoon's decisive qualifying session. The rain that's been forecast for today stayed away for free practice, but there remains a risk of precipitation hitting Macau in a couple of hours.

While Felix headed the practice sheets for Mücke Motorsport, undertaking some detailed aerodynamic set-up work along the way, the other two drivers representing the Berlin squad this weekend - Pascal Wehrlein and Mitch Gilbert - wound up sixth and 23rd respectively.

COMMENT | FELIX
"Another good and problem-free session. We spent the majority of the time doing back-to-back evaluations on the aerodynamic settings we want to use for the remainder of the weekend, and it was encouraging to see that we were competitive almost regardless of the wing levels we ran. We have a pretty clear idea of what we want to do ahead of Qualifying 2 this afternoon, and - after going second fastest in the first session yesterday - I think we have earned the right to aim for the very top. It will be massively close, however, but we will do whatever we can to maintain our current speed."
