Felix makes Macau Grand Prix headway with second in Qualification Race

Felix leapt from fourth on the grid to finish second in the Qualification Race ahead of Sunday's Macau Grand Prix, shadowing António Félix da Costa across the line to emphasise his status as a genuine contender for victory at the Asian event.

A start that can only be described as fantastic saw Felix immediately shoot into the lead from his slot on the second row, but Félix da Costa could strike back just moments later when he slipstreamed past Felix on the run to Mandarin Bend.

From there on, the duo were never challenged at the front of the pack, gradually building their advantage over the rest of the field throughout the 10-lap race. Felix stayed within two seconds of Félix da Costa throughout the event, occasionally increasing the pressure on the Portuguese but never committing to a serious attack - knowing that an incident in the Qualification Race would likely ruin his chances of a strong result on Sunday.

Felix posted the second-fastest lap of the race, a tenth down on the time set by Daniel Juncadella (who finished fifth). The results in the Qualification Race are used to form the grid for Sunday's 15-lap finale, where Felix will thus start from the front row as the most prestigious F3 event on the globe reaches its climax.

COMMENT | FELIX
"I made a very good start and was able to grab the lead straight away, but it was probably a bit too good as it enabled António to get a tow on me into Mandarin. He simply drove past me on the straight, and then we were able to open up a gap to the rest of the field. I continued to feel very comfortable behind the wheel today, and without saying too much, I think I could have gone quite a bit faster still. The Qualification Race is all about finishing inside the top five or six, though, and there was no point in risking anything considering I was already up to second. Today's race confirmed that we are as strong as anyone this weekend, but tomorrow will be a crazy day - and anything can happen. I'm ready for it, and so is the team."
