Pre-season test 2: Monza

FIA Formula 3 European Championship
Venue:
Autodromo Nazionale Monza (Italy) | Date: 19th March 2013 | Weather: Sunny but cold

By Mattias Persson

Felix got his first taste of the legendary circuit of Monza on Tuesday, as the final FIA Formula 3 European Championship pre-season test was cut from two to just one day of action.

The test had originally been scheduled to run over both Monday and Tuesday, but the weather put an effective halt to those plans due to a burst of snow hitting the Italian venue yesterday. As a result, teams and drivers were limited to just one busy day of activities, working their way through various programmes ahead of this weekend's season-opening race at the Milan track.

Having never driven at Monza before, Felix was happy to learn that at least one of the two test days would go ahead, allowing him to gain valuable knowledge of the circuit before racing gets underway later this week. He was faced with a very extensive programme, with Mücke Motorsport likewise lacking experience of the venue - paying their latest visit to Monza as long ago as 2002 while main rivals Fortec Motorsports, Prema Powerteam and Carlin have all raced here in various national F3 series within the past year.

Felix initially suffered from understeer, but managed to improve the situation by the afternoon, posting the 16th fastest time overall on a 1m46.365s - 1.011s adrift of pace-setter Will Buller in the ThreeBond with T-Sport-Nissan. Felix's ideal lap time, however - calculated by putting all three personal best sectors together - stopped the clocks in 1m45.817s, shaving a full half second off his on-the-charts effort.

All four Mücke Motorsport drivers lapped within 0.24 seconds of each other.

COMMENT | FELIX

"Monza is a truly legendary circuit, and it's great to have finally completed my first laps around such a historic venue. I like it a lot; it's fast and flowing, and you really need to be aggressive over the kerbs. It's quite different to the majority of the other tracks I've driven at, and it was important for us to get this test day under our belts ahead of the races this weekend as we lack data in comparison to some of the other teams.

"We started out with a poor baseline this morning, and suffered from really high levels of understeer. We gradually managed to dial that out, though, and by the end of the afternoon, I felt much more comfortable. We still have some work to do before we find the sweet spot, but we will have another 80 minutes of practice on Friday and will continue to make progress by then. The racing is when it counts, and I'm really looking forward to finding out where we really are when things get serious this weekend."
