Felix endures tough Monza qualifying

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 1
Venue:

Felix will start this weekend's trio of races from 11th, seventh and 12th position respectively, after enduring a challenging time in this afternoon's qualifying double-header at Monza.

Having gone fastest in free practice earlier on today, Felix went into qualifying as one of the pole position favourites, but a sudden drop in pace - which is currently being investigated by the Mücke Motorsport engineers - meant he had to be content with 11th overall in the opening Q1 session.

The result means that Felix will start tomorrow's Race 1 from that same place (11th), while he will commence Sunday's Race 2 from the fourth row of the grid after ending up seventh on the charts over second-fastest laps.

In Q2, which is used to determine the grid for Race 3, Felix came home in 12th. Both qualifying efforts were hampered by a lack of slipstream, with Felix unable to improve on his morning time of 1m45.243s - which would have been good enough to put him right in the mix for pole position - while the majority of his rivals found extra time in the afternoon.

QUOTE | FELIX
"I'm obviously very disappointed with how qualifying went for us today, but there you go. I didn't get a good enough slipstream in either of the sessions - particularly not in Q1 - and our pace went away in quite an unusual manner this afternoon; and we really need to understand why.

"Pascal (Wehrlein) proved that we've got the pace in the car and I did a competitive time this morning, but then we didn't manage to improve when everyone else did. It's going to be tough working our way back to the front tomorrow and on Sunday, but that's where I genuinely think we belong and I will remain at the track for however long it takes this evening to fully understand what happened today."
