Felix in the mix in ultra-close Norisring free practice

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 6
Venue:
Norisring (Germany) | Date: 12 July 2013 | Weather: Sunny and warm

By Mattias Persson

Friday free practice at the Norisring gave a hint of things to come this weekend, as an incredible 18 drivers lapped within half a second of each other around the Nuremberg street circuit to signal the start of what looks set to be an extremely competitive round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

In two exceptionally close sessions, the level of the 28-car F3 field once again became apparent, with little - and in some cases nothing - separating the drivers as they set about getting to grips with the intricacies of the bumpy German venue.

Felix immediately laid down the initial marker, topping the opening 40-minute segment of practice 0.035s ahead of championship rival Raffaele Marciello. The short nature of the sub-50 second lap saw a full 26 out of the 28 runners end up within a second of Felix's benchmark.

The subsequent, concluding session saw times tumble as grip levels improved, with Russian GP3 regular Daniil Kvyat eventually heading an exceptionally close list just a mere one thousandth of a second ahead of Carlin team-mate Harry Tincknell. Felix's effort of 49.324s - while marking an improvement of more than two tenths compared to the time he posted in the first segment - left him in ninth place, but well within striking distance of the two Carlin runners as he wound up just 0.166s off the outright pace (despite a spin in the late stages).

With times so incredibly closely-matched, this afternoon's two qualifying sessions are set to provide some intense action as drivers continue to push the boundaries further still in pursuit of the optimum grid slots for this weekend's three races.

QUOTE | FELIX

"A good, solid start to the weekend. I think we are in much better shape around here than last year, and I was able to immediately top the times in the first part of the session. I was gradually improving my pace and the confidence behind the wheel towards the end of the second segment as well, but spun in the final hairpin and decided to slow things down a little bit. With such incredibly close lap times, I think qualifying will be something else this weekend, and it will be all about getting that perfect lap in when the tyres are at their best. It will be interesting, and - as always - I will push to the maximum."
