Felix snatches spectacular last-gasp pole at the Norisring

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 6
Venue:
Norisring (Germany) | Date: 12 July 2013 | Weather: Sunny and warm

By Mattias Persson

Felix picked up where he left off at Zandvoort last weekend by grabbing pole position for tomorrow's opening race at the Norisring in spectacular fashion, overcoming title rival Raffaele Marciello with a last-minute do-or-die qualifying attempt around the streets of Nuremburg as the top three were covered by just 0.002 seconds.

As predicted, Norisring qualifying turned into a fight to remember for years to come. The first of the two sessions - in which the grids for Saturday's two races are formed - saw a host of drivers take turns at the top of the initial timesheets, before the scrap for pole reached a dramatic climax in the dying moments.

Felix Serralles was sitting on top of the table with under a minute to go, but was demoted by Marciello by a mere one thousandth of a second as the Italian bounced between the walls in his Prema Powerteam machine to grab P1. The last word was yet to be said, however - and it was a Flying Swede who spoke it. With one second (!) left on the clock, Felix threw his Mücke Motorsport-Dallara across the line to bag pole 0.001 seconds ahead of Marciello, with Serralles third - another thousand in arrears. Fourth-placed Alex Lynn, meanwhile, didn't know whether to laugh or cry at having ended up outside the top three - with a time 0.007s shy of pole position...

On the second-fastest lap times' chart which is used to shape the Race 2 grid, Felix wound up third behind Marciello and Lynn.

Qualifying 2 then saw the field battle for Race 3 grid slots, with Felix initially being stuck in traffic and running in the lower regions of the top ten. The session was marked by a strategic tussle in which the drivers sought the ideal slipstream along the Norisring straights; something Felix eventually gave up chasing to instead channel all of his energy into an unhindered lap. The effort immediately established him on the front row, alongside Marciello who - in his own words - "got a perfect tow" to grab Race 3 pole.

QUOTE | FELIX

"That was close - just like we knew it would be! I have struggled a bit around here in the past and I think this has historically been my weakest track on the calendar, so to claim pole position and to line-up in the top three for all of this weekend's races feels really, really good. We're maintaining our strong form and the team again did a great job in preparing the car.

"The first session actually felt worse than the second one, but I managed to get a good, clean lap together right at the end which was just - very just! - enough for P1. I had a slightly better feeling behind the wheel in the second session, but I ran into a lot of traffic in the beginning and had to back off. Everyone was looking for a good tow, and so was I - but eventually I decided to just play it safe and complete a lap on my own. I'm actually quite surprised to have ended up second in Q2, to be honest, because the slipstream does give you quite an advantage around here and I had none.

"We are well-placed for another strong trio of races this weekend, but this is only the beginning and we still have to bring home the points. I'm confident we'll be able to challenge for wins once again, but a lot can happen at the Norisring and the key to success will be hard work overnight and - once the racing gets underway - some clean, incident-free opening laps."
