Felix overtakes Marciello to win final Norisring race

By Mattias Persson

Felix overtook FIA Formula 3 European Championship title rival Raffaele Marciello to win Sunday's concluding race at the Norisring, erasing any previous jinx associated with the Nuremberg venue by establishing a new all-time lap record in the process.

Felix – who prior to the race found out that the FIA had rescinded its disqualification threat regarding the fuel sample saga – started the event from the front row of the grid, alongside Marciello. As the race settled in, Felix immediately put the Italian under intense pressure, eventually forcing his opponent into a mistake at the Grundig hairpin on lap 14 and snatching a lead he would then never surrender.

At the flag, Felix’s commanding advantage had stretched to a full 4.9 seconds, making him the highest points-scorer of the weekend with second, second and first places respectively in the three races. The deficit to Marciello now stands at just 24.5 points with four rounds left to complete in 2013.

To underline his pace, Felix once again set yet another lap record, which means he now holds the all-time F3 benchmarks at the Norisring, Zandvoort, Valencia, Hockenheim and at the Red Bull Ring.

QUOTE | FELIX
"This weekend has been a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, with all the things that have gone on - but this was the perfect way to end it. We had fantastic pace today, and I could see relatively early on that I was quite a lot faster than Raffaele. He defended the inside line going into the hairpin - which is the normal thing to do - but eventually he made a mistake which allowed me to dive past. From there, I was able to open up a gap and maintain my lead throughout the rest of the race.

"I actually didn't expect to be the highest points-scorer this weekend, since the Norisring hasn't really suited me before. With a new lap record and three podiums, however, I can't be anything but thrilled, and I think this puts us in a very strong position as we head into the final stage of the year at circuits that I really, really enjoy. A big thanks to the team for once again giving me a brilliant car!"
