Felix Rosenqvist stages emphatic Nürburgring fightback

Felix Rosenqvist scored his 12th podium of the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign as the single-seater series regrouped at the Nürburgring this weekend.

Rosenqvist came home third in the opening race of the meeting on Saturday morning, and was then well-placed for another strong result as he lined up on the front row in the subsequent Race 2. After stalling at the start, however, Rosenqvist dropped back to 25th place – setting the stage for a remarkable fightback drive. In a memorable presentation, the 21-year-old overtook no less than 16 of his rivals as he clawed his way back up through the field, eventually crossing the line in ninth place to salvage two potentially crucial championship points. To underline his pace as he picked off his competitors, the Mücke Motorsport youngster also threw in the fastest lap of the race.

In the third and final race on Sunday, Rosenqvist finished fifth. The Swede remains in second place in the overall championship standings, now sitting 72.5 points adrift of Italian Raffaele Marciello with 225 points still up for grabs in 2013.

"It’s always nice to be on the podium, but all-in-all, this wasn’t the sort of weekend I was hoping for," says Felix Rosenqvist. "We were a step behind our main rivals here at the Nürburgring, and we lacked that last tenth of a second. I lost the chance to fight for a really good result when I stalled at the start of that second race, and the fact that I put in the fastest lap proves what we would have been capable of – but at least it was one of the most fun races I’ve ever driven! We have had some really, really strong weekends recently, and it’s inevitable that – sooner or later – things take a slight turn for the worse; that’s motor racing. I already look forward to the next race, and we will do everything we possibly can to make sure we perform better by then."

The next FIA Formula 3 European Championship round takes place at Zandvoort in the Netherlands – where Rosenqvist won the prestigious RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 for a second time earlier in the year – on September 28-29.
