Pole Position for Race 1 in Malaysia

Having set the pace at each and every session so far this week, Felix Rosenqvist was the odds-on favourite to claim Pole Position for the first of three Formula Asia 2.0 races this weekend. Swede Rosenqvist has been on impressive form all throughout practice, and dutifully secured the coveted first grid slot with a margin of some 0.7 seconds. Felix has now scored two Pole Positions this season, although the Shanghai results won't count towards the Championship. The Sepang event therefore acts as the first opportunity to collect points for the 2008 campaign, and things could hardly have got off to a better start heading into what looks set to be a physically tough race tomorrow. The temperature in Malaysia currently sits at 31-33 degrees Centigrade, and managing the Michelin tires was a major concern during qualifying. Felix only needed seven laps to put an end to all potential threats, while the major competitors drove about 10-12.

Results, qualifying (top five)

1. Felix Rosenqvist 2m05.812s
2. Mathias Beche +0.675s
3. Yuki Iwasaki +0.869s
4. Benjamin Rouget +1.264s
5. Yoshitaka Kuroda +1.464s

Races 1 and 2 will be run on Friday the 16th of May, while qualifying for the third and final race of the Sepang event will take place on Saturday. The Sunday race (Race 3) will be arranged using the short configuration "North Circuit" track layout, which excludes the final part of the Grand Prix lap. Further reports will follow during the weekend.
