FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES
Date: September 30th, 2011
Venue: Circuit Ricardo Tormo (Spain)
Felix opened Formula 3 Euro Series proceedings at Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo by going fastest in the first part of free practice on Friday morning, before eventually ending up second overall on combined times after championship leader Roberto Merhi topped the concluding segment of the session.
Felix was one of several drivers not to opt for new tyres in the first section of the divided two-hour session, but still managed to top the timesheets with a time of 1m27.979s. That effort almost remained unbeaten in the second segment of practice, until Merhi threw in a 1m27.878s lap a few minutes from the end. Felix ended up fourth on the list in the second hour.
Felix had a slight off at Turn 2 halfway through the opening hour, but rejoined the track without damage to his Mücke Motorsport machine. Several drivers - including Signature trio Daniel Abt, Laurens Vanthoor and Marco Wittmann - ran wide on the exit of the ultra-fast Turn 1, but without sustaining further drama than a bouncy kerb ride.
The Valencia weekend also marks the return of Felix's regular team-mate Nigel Melker, who missed the Silverstone round due to GP3 commitments at Monza. The Dutchman arrives at Valencia fresh from two days of GP2 testing at Jerez, where he wound up third quickest to underline the competitiveness of the Formula 3 Euro Series field. Melker ended up third overall in today's practice, 0.386s off Merhi and just over two tenths adrift of Felix.
As per usual, qualifying will be covered in real-time here at www.felixracing.se, with LIVE commentary commencing at 16.00 CEST this afternoon.
