Pre-season testing - Barcelona - Day 1

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES
Venue: Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona (Spain)
Date: March 21st, 2012
Weather: Dry/wet
Duration of test: 2 days

Felix picked up where he left off in Valencia last weekend by once again heading the field as Formula 3 Euro Series pre-season testing resumed in changeable weather conditions in Barcelona on Wednesday.

Following two days of bright sunshine in Valencia, Circuit de Catalunya presented the teams and drivers with a completely different cup of tea as they were greeted by heavily overcast skies upon arrival in Barcelona. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the majority of the day's running duly took place on a wet track after a series of showers hit the venue shortly before lunch, giving Felix an opportunity to familiarise himself with Hankook's new rain tyres.

Before the rain arrived, the drivers were treated to two hours of dry running in the morning. Felix wasted no time in jumping to the top of the timesheets, setting the pace from his first flying lap onwards. Once the rain began to fall, Felix had worked his way down to an eventual best of 1m39.634s - fastest of the day, 0.4s ahead of second-placed team-mate Pascal Wehrlein and a further 0.4s up on Michael Lewis (Prema Powerteam) in third.

Felix, having also gone quickest in the rain-hit final hours of the morning, was once again set to haul himself to the top of the timesheets in the fully-wet afternoon session when he was forced to abandon his fastest lap due to red flags as the day was brought to a slightly premature end following a crash from Daniel Juncadella. Instead, Felix had to make do with second behind Wehrlein as the afternoon turned into evening, with 2011 Macau Grand Prix winner Juncadella wounding up third.

Pre-season testing ahead of the 2012 championship campaign comes to an end tomorrow, with the final day of action at Circuit de Catalunya.

COMMENT | FELIX
"Yet another constructive day for us, as we got to work on our wet-weather performance for the first time this year. The new rain tyres seem to be performing as they are supposed to, and I also managed to try out a new driving technique that I think will make me a bit stronger in the wet. You don't get too many opportunities to improve your driving in conditions like these during the course of a normal season, so it's vital to make the most of every chance."

Our pace continues to be strong - both in the dry and in the wet - even though it was a bit of a shame that I had to abandon my fastest lap in the afternoon. I really feel confident in the car right now, and we will work flat out to try and further improve our package during the final day of testing tomorrow.
