Pre-season testing - Valencia - Day 1

FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES
Venue: Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia (Spain)
Date: March 17th, 2012
Weather: Dry/sunny
Duration of test: 2 days

Felix got the first pre-season Formula 3 Euro Series test of the year off to a strong start at Valencia on Saturday, after going second fastest in the opening morning session and topping the timesheets in the afternoon.

Not only was Saturday the very first occasion of on-track action of the new campaign, it also marked the arrival of the brand new Dallara F312 car on the Formula 3 Euro Series stage. With a new chassis inevitably presenting teams and drivers with plenty of new things to learn, Felix and Mücke Motorsport dedicated the day to system checks and data gathering as they worked their way through an extensive programme.

Felix wound up second in the morning session behind Prema Powerteam newcomer and Ferrari development driver Raffaele Marciello, who in the process posted the fastest lap of the day (1m28.013s) - albeit only half a tenth ahead of Felix's later benchmark in the afternoon (1m28.066s).

Marciello and Felix ended the day half a second clear of the rest of the field, which was headed by reigning ADAC Formel Masters champion Pascal Wehrlein - Felix's new team-mate at Mücke Motorsport for this year - on a 1m28.572s.

Ahead of the 2012 campaign, the championship has also acquired the services of Korean firm Hankook as the series' new official tyre supplier. The Hankook Formula 3 Euro Series tyres were used for the first time today, which led to high amounts of running from the majority of drivers as competitors sought to gain as much knowledge as possible about the new tyre/chassis combination.

The Valencia test concludes tomorrow.

COMMENT | FELIX
"A decent start to the season, or at least the pre-season. We completed a lot of work today and were able to collect a lot of valuable data on the new car, so I think we can be relatively happy. The most important thing right now is finding a balance we can work with over the rest of the year, and it's essential to keep focussing on your own programme and not bother about what the others are up to."

"The new Dallara chassis felt strong out of the box this morning, and we have an idea of where to go from here. I enjoyed being back behind the wheel and didn't encounter any problems despite having not driven since the Macau Grand Prix last November. The Hankook tyres seem to be very constant and reliable, and I think they will require a different style of driving compared to last year. Lap times are not really important at the moment - even though it's always better to be at the top of the list rather than the bottom - and we have got a lot of work ahead of us before we can start to think about pure performance."
