Two wins, two Pole Positions, two fastest race laps and a new track record – Felix Rosenqvist was in top form when the Swedish Formula Renault championship visited Karlskoga for rounds 5-6 this weekend. Rosenqvist headed every session held at the meeting, including Friday morning practice, and became the first driver this year to do so. Consequently, the Swede saw his championship lead increase to 13 points with half the season now completed.
“It’s hard to ask for more than being fastest in all sessions and beating the existing track record, so I’m obviously happy to have achieved this little grand slam,” Rosenqvist says. “The car worked perfectly, and following Falkenberg, the team has done an absolutely stunning job in guaranteeing that we maintain our championship momentum. I hope we can have more weekends like this in the future!”
Felix and his Team BS Motorsport team-mate Daniel Roos dominated qualifying for the first race of the weekend, locking out the front row of the grid with lap times almost one second better than their closest competitors. As the lights went out, Rosenqvist and Roos soon left the rest of the field behind and when Roos retired with technical problems, Felix eased off to control the race to the finish line. A penalty for unsafe driving on the way to the starting grid almost cost the 17-year-old his victory, though, but the Stewards of the Meeting withdrew their decision and Rosenqvist got to keep his ten points. On Saturday, Felix won with a margin of eight seconds ahead of Roos.
“If you’ve got a margin of more than a couple of seconds in a race, it might look simple from the outside,” Rosenqvist says. “However, it’s easy to lose concentration and I’m glad I managed to keep a high level of focus even when the action wasn’t that intense. I’m sure the final three race events will be very tough, so my advantage in the championship is nice. Now, we need to re-group ahead of the races at Anderstorp, which is my home circuit, next week. I will do my best to put on a great show for everyone there!”
The Swedish Formula Renault championship will be back soon, with the races at the former Grand Prix circuit in Anderstorp on August 21-23 marking the start of the second half of the season. Felix Rosenqvist will be available in the pits throughout the event.
