Felix Rosenqvist rounds maiden F3 season off with second place
Felix Rosenqvist rounded off his first year in Formula 3 with second place as the 2010 ATS Formula 3 Cup season came to a close at Oschersleben this weekend. The Swede found himself locked in a battle for victory with Willi Steindl in the second and final race of the weekend, and eventually finished just 0.4 seconds shy of the Austrian. Rosenqvist ends up fifth overall in the championship standings, having scored two victories, eight podiums and one Pole Position.
”A good way to end my first year in Formula 3,” Felix Rosenqvist says. ”We couldn’t quite get the car to where we wanted it at the start of the weekend, but it gradually became better and better and the second race was all about trying to push Willi into a mistake. Unfortunately, it’s extremely difficult to overtake at Oschersleben, and even though I came close to giving it a go on a couple of occasions I still think second place is a solid result. I want to direct a big thank you to my team, Performance Racing, for a season which has made me a much-improved and more consistent driver.”
Following a challenging first qualifying session at the event, where he was taken in for untimely weight bridge controls ahead of a run on new tyres, Rosenqvist had to make do with starting Race 1 from eighth place on the grid. A drive-through penalty for jumping the start then demoted the 18-year-old from fourth to 11th in the race itself, effectively putting an end to his hopes of reaching third place in the championship. In Race 2, Rosenqvist set off from fifth and gained three positions on his way to second place.
”I am really glad that we opted to go for Formula 3 in Germany this season,” Rosenqvist concludes. ”I have never developed so much during the course of a year; I’ve had to adapt and improve my driving technique, have further extended my understanding of just how important even the tiniest of details are and have experienced what international single-seater racing is really like. To be able to summarise 2010 with two victories and eight podiums - during a campaign which was always going to be aimed at gaining experience and learning the ropes - is obviously very pleasant, and creates the perfect base from which to build in the future.”
Despite the ATS Formula 3 Cup season having just come to an end, Felix Rosenqvist now faces a hectic few months with numerous tests and other commitments already on the schedule.
