Felix Rosenqvist fought back from a compromised qualifying session to climb 17 positions in the opening race of the combined European and British Formula 3 weekend at the Norisring. Rosenqvist lost out on some valuable preparation time at the Nuremberg street circuit when he was hit from behind during Friday free practice, and had to make do with 22nd on the 28-car grid for the first race after suffering from severe tyre heat-up issues in qualifying.
Once the racing got underway, however, the Swede immediately showed his genuine pace by posting the fourth fastest lap of the race, only a tenth slower than the outright benchmark, as he rose emphatically to an eventual fifth place overall – and third among the Formula 3 Euro Series and FIA European F3 Championship drivers. In the second race, Rosenqvist then took the chequered flag as fourth overall and second in class, having initially held the Formula 3 Euro Series lead until he brushed the wall halfway around the opening lap. The third and concluding race of the weekend was stopped due to heavy rain.
"Considering where we were following qualifying, this turned out to be a very good weekend for us – and I would never have thought that I would reach the top five from 22nd on the grid in Race 1," says Felix Rosenqvist. "The whole team really needed this after all the misfortune we’ve suffered so far this year. Qualifying didn’t go according to plan, of course, and I just couldn’t get the tyres into the right operating window. In such a competitive field, that becomes extra costly, as proved by the fact that I was 0.7 seconds away from pole position and still outside the top 20; there were 25 cars within a second. To leave Nuremberg with two Formula 3 Euro Series podiums feels really good, and I also managed to reduce the gap to the drivers ahead of me in the overall standings."
The next round of the FIA European F3 Championship campaign takes place at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on July 26-27, with Formula 3 Euro Series action set to resume at the Nürburgring on August 17-19.
