Second place for Felix Rosenqvist at EuroSpeedway Lausitz
18-year-old Felix Rosenqvist took his seventh podium of the season when he finished in second place in the final ATS Formula 3 Cup race of the weekend at EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Germany. Rosenqvist started the race from seventh on the grid after a chaotic qualifying session - which had to be stopped a full three times due to a range of incidents in very challenging weather conditions - and overcame braking problems to gain six positions on his way to cementing a Swedish 1-2 as he crossed the finish line 0.3 seconds behind fellow national motor racing team member Jimmy Eriksson. Before taking to the podium, Rosenqvist had also qualified on the front row ahead of the first race at the event.
”A tough weekend, which I’m actually not very satisfied with,” Felix Rosenqvist says. ”I don’t think we got to grips with things all weekend, so it was slightly surprising to end up on the front row in Qualifying 1 and fight for victory in the second race. We didn’t manage to find a suitable set-up here and I had to battle a strange issue with the brakes, so considering the circumstances, it still was an OK result. Congratulations to Jimmy, who took his first Formula 3 victory - although next time, I’d rather prefer to stand on top of the podium myself!”
In the first race of the weekend, Rosenqvist stalled at the start and saw his second place from qualifying turn into tenth halfway around the first lap. Felix quickly chased down Luis Derani, but spun on a drying circuit and had to make do with eighth - and one important championship point - at the chequered flag. The eventual second place in Race 2 was the result of a better getaway, with the Performance Racing driver immediately overtaking Markus Pommer and positioning himself in third - closely shadowing Eriksson and Willi Steindl. When Steindl later had to retire from the race after a misunderstanding when lapping a backmarker, Rosenqvist put pressure on his countryman for the lead but was ultimately unable to get past.
”It’s difficult to do a good start in Formula 3, and a number of top drivers had problems getting off the line this weekend,” Rosenqvist concludes. ”I lost an opportunity to put in a good performance in Race 1 after I stalled, and I will have to work on my technique to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I think we have the potential to end the season on a really positive note, so I’m already looking forward to the next race in two weeks with great anticipation.”
Felix Rosenqvist is currently in fifth place in the championship standings, and remains locked in a scrap for third overall. The next ATS Formula 3 Cup round is scheduled for the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit on August 27-29.
