Felix takes maiden pole position in Red Bull Ring qualifying

Felix has claimed the first pole position of his Formula 3 Euro Series and FIA European F3 Championship career, edging championship rival Daniel Juncadella by 0.038 seconds in a closely-fought qualifying battle at the Red Bull Ring on Friday evening.

Qualifying took place under clear blue skies, and despite temperatures rising in comparison to free practice this morning, tyre warming played a major role in the outcome of the session.

Felix held top spot with two thirds of the running completed, but when the final succession of quick laps commenced, the times quickly began to tumble and a bunch of drivers - including Juncadella, Raffaele Marciello and Carlos Sainz Jr. - took turns at the top of the timesheets. Felix was always a contender for pole position, though, and eventually produced a 1m26.457s to out-pace his competition and claim top spot.

The result means that Felix will lead the field at the start of Sunday's Race 3, but with the tyre warming issues proving severe in the session, the Mücke Motorsport man only found time to get one fast lap in - with his second-quickest effort only enough to place him seventh on the grid for tomorrow's Race 1.

The pole position is the first for a Swedish driver in the history of the two championships.

"It's obviously a great feeling to have claimed my first-ever pole position in the championship - and this is the best possible confirmation we could have that we are on the right road. Having said that, though, I was actually not at all happy with my lap. I really can't understand that it was good enough for pole, because it simply felt bad. The track was very slow and I sincerely believe I could have been around half a second quicker. It's a shame that I never got the chance to do two quick laps - the tyres just took too long to warm up - but we know that we are genuinely quick here and I will be aiming to improve from seventh on the grid tomorrow. Whatever happens, we will be on pole on Sunday, and I have to thank the team for having given me a competitive car here so far this weekend."
