Crash denies Felix opportunity to improve after pole scrap in Qualifying 1

RTL GP Masters of Formula 3
Zandvoort (the Netherlands) | Date: July 14th, 2012 | Weather: Wet but drying

By Mattias Persson

Felix was involved in a tight scrap for provisional pole position in the first RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 qualifying session of the day at Zandvoort, but eventually ended up fifth after a late crash denied him the opportunity to improve on a drying track.

The 20-minute session, which was delayed heavily as a result of overnight thunderstorms, gradually got drier and drier as the rain eased off. Felix, Pascal Wehrlein and Carlos Sainz Jr. were initially battling for the fastest time, and Felix was sitting second behind Sainz Jr. with just four minutes to go.

A mistake in the treacherous Hugenholtz corner, however, saw Felix crash his Mücke Motorsport Dallara against the tyre barriers as he set about trying to improve further still. The red flags came out - in part due to Felix's crash, and in part due to a similar accident from Raffaele Marciello - and Felix duly had to sit out the final moments of action as conditions continued to improve.

The one who made the most of the situation was Daniel Juncadella, who had struggled for pace in the wetter part of the session. Sitting in 14th place as he headed out on his final flying lap, the Spaniard managed to jump to the top of the timesheets, demonstrating just how much better the track had become.

Felix's relatively early effort still saw him hold on to fifth, 0.990s adrift of Juncadella, as Alex Lynn (Fortec) and Will Buller (Carlin) vaulted themselves into the mix on their final laps as well. The second qualifying session takes place at 16.40 this afternoon, marking the final opportunity for drivers to improve on their current provisional grid positions for tomorrow's race.

"Things were going well in the beginning of the session, and I was battling for pole when I made a mistake at Hugenholtz. It was my own fault and a big shame, because I would really have liked to see what we could have done in the drier conditions. The car should be OK for Qualifying 2, though, and I'm obviously hoping for sunshine in order to improve my position on the grid for tomorrow."
