Felix gets real Macau work underway with solid qualifying performance

Felix completed a solid first qualifying session for the Macau Grand Prix to get down to real work in acclimatising to the requirements of the special F3 event, following his slight tap of the wall at the Lisboa corner in initial free practice this morning.

As per the usual Macau tradition, it didn't take long until the session had to be stopped following a crash. Daniel Juncadella put his Prema Powerteam machine in the wall on the exit of Fishermen's Bend, bringing out the red flags as a result only ten minutes into proceedings.

As qualifying resumed shortly afterwards, Jazeman Jaafar copied Juncadella's mistake as he too got out of shape at Fishermen's - the Malaysian's wrecked Carlin remaining stranded on the inside line of the circuit throughout the rest of the session and causing confusion to the rest of the drivers who couldn't make their minds up whether to push for an improved lap time or obey the constant yellow flags at the site of Jaafar's accident.

Felix chose to play it safe and decided to abandon any push for a likely improvement in the caution area of Sector 3, which resulted in 25th place on the timesheets. He did, however, continuously improve his best times through Sectors 1 and 2 and was on course for a better lap time on a number of occasions, only to back off again as he passed Jaafar's stricken car.

Edoardo Mortara secured provisional Pole Position for the Macau Grand Prix after some good timing saw the Italian post his fastest time - a 2m13.068s effort - just moments before the Jaafar incident ensured none of his competitors were able to improve.

All drivers will get a new chance to better their performances tomorrow, when the starting grid for Saturday's Qualification Race will be decided in another qualifying session.

“This session went much better than the one this morning, and I am really enjoying myself out there! This circuit is so much fun to drive, and I'm confident that we will be able to extract a lot more from the package we have. Just by setting up the car a bit better, I think we can find one or two seconds. I had quite severe understeering today, but that is something we will be working on for tomorrow. I will continue to try and just learn as much as possible over the rest of the weekend, and in doing so, the performance will automatically become stronger and stronger.”

Next session: Free Practice 2 | Tomorrow at 11.15
