Felix secures front-row slot in Hockenheim qualifying

Felix got his 2012 season underway in promising style by putting his Mücke Motorsport-Dallara on the front row for tomorrow's opening race at Hockenheim, after coming through an intense qualifying session at the German Grand Prix venue.

With the new-for-2012 Hankook tyres taking longer than expected to get up to temperature, several drivers found themselves in a position where they would only get a handful of undisturbed laps to set their times at the end of the session.

Felix, having been hit by traffic on most of his previous efforts, eventually found some clear air to post the third-quickest outright time of the session, behind Spanish duo Carlos Sainz Jr. - who claimed the first-ever Formula 3 Euro Series Pole Position for Carlin - and Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam). That means Felix will start from third on the grid in Sunday's Race 3, but alongside Sainz Jr. on the front row in the opening race tomorrow thanks to a second-fastest lap time that was quicker than Juncadella's.

"A good session for us, and we have to be happy with third and second places considering the circumstances," said Felix. "I haven't felt too good in the car so far this weekend, but to still qualify on the front row is a good achievement. I think we have a competitive race car and I hope we will be able to challenge Carlos, Daniel and the others at the front tomorrow."

Race 1 starts at 11.15 local time on Saturday.
