Felix takes seventh, ninth in frustrating Pau qualifying session

FIA EUROPEAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue:
Pau (France) | Date: May 12th, 2012 | Weather: Overcast but warm

Felix will start this weekend's two Grand Prix de Pau races from seventh and ninth respectively, after enduring a frustrating qualifying session on the twisting street circuit on Saturday morning.

With qualifying divided into two groups to reduce the risk of drivers running into traffic, Carlos Sainz Jr. set the pace in the first group to hit the track for their 15 minutes of running. In doing so, the Spaniard secured himself a guaranteed spot on the front row for Race 2 despite the outcome in the second group, in which Prema Powerteam's Raffaele Marciello eventually pipped Sainz Jr. to Pole Position by posting a quicker lap time than the Carlin driver had managed to achieve.

Felix - who, like Marciello, ran in the faster second group - posted the fifth fastest time in the "A" segment of drivers, but will have to start Race 2 (where the grid is formed on the basis of outright lap times) from ninth after the contenders in the other group have been taken into account. For Race 1, where the starting order is decided by each driver's second-fastest time, Felix will start from seventh just ahead of FIA European Formula 3 Championship rival Sainz Jr.

Race 1 gets underway at 14.25 this afternoon, with Marciello on Pole after the Ferrari Academy-backed Italian managed to top the charts over second-fastest lap times as well.

QUOTE | FELIX
"A frustrating session for me. I set my fastest time early on, and when I really began to get the tyres into the right window, I ran into traffic and yellow flags. It's a shame, because I know we are faster than this and my team-mate did a good job in the other group. I wasn't able to plan my session in the best possible way, but it's always a bit of a lottery at a venue like this. We are facing an uphill struggle in the races from where we are starting, but I will do my best and hopefully we can still salvage some decent points."
