Solid drive sees Felix end up fourth in opening Grand Prix de Pau race

Felix produced a solid drive in the first race of the weekend at the Grand Prix de Pau, as he went from seventh on the grid to fourth overall - and second among the FIA European Formula 3 Championship drivers - to drastically reduce the gap to the top of the points table.

Another trademark getaway off the line saw Felix leap past British F3 Series runner Jack Harvey at the start, and he then found himself stuck under the rear wing of Alex Lynn's Fortec machine for the duration of the race. Although chasing his rival hard throughout the event and being visibly quicker, Felix was unable to find a way past on the ultra-tight street circuit and eventually crossed the finish line just 0.8 seconds behind Lynn.

Daniel Juncadella and Pascal Wehrlein had initially been running second and third respectively, but a collision at the hairpin - which left Juncadella uncharacteristically furious -  halfway through the race threw both into retirement and brought out the safety car.

The restart proved largely undramatic, and once the full 23-lap distance had been completed, Raffaele Marciello had transformed Pole Position into victory for Prema Powerteam. Felix's fourth place overall translated into second in the European Championship when British F3 Series regulars Jazeman Jaafar and Lynn had been discounted, and Juncadella's retirement means Felix is now only three points behind leader Carlos Sainz Jr. (sixth in today's race) in the championship standings.

The final race of the weekend takes place at 14.00 local time tomorrow afternoon.

QUOTE | FELIX
"I made another good start and managed to get past Harvey into the first corner, and then I tried to push as hard as possible behind Alex throughout the rest of the race. It is extremely difficult to overtake around here, though, and I never got an opportunity to truly challenge him. Still, our pace was as good as we knew it could be in this race, and I think we have to be pleased. I closed the gap to Daniel and Carlos in the championship, which is nice, but it's still early days and we are in for another tough job from ninth on the grid tomorrow. Everything can happen here in Pau, though, so I'll give it my all!"
