Lap one podium attack sees Felix slip back in Masters of Formula 3

RTL GP Masters of Formula 3
Venue:
Zandvoort (the Netherlands) | Date: July 15th, 2012 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

An all-or-nothing approach following a strong start in the 2012 RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 saw Felix challenge for third by Turn 1, but a rejecting Carlos Sainz Jr. pushed the 2011 winner wide on the exit of the corner and Felix eventually had to be content with ninth by the chequered flag.

Like so many times before, Felix rocketed off the line and immediately shot past fourth-placed Hannes van Asseldonk - an eventual podium finisher - from fifth on the grid. Knowing that the Masters of Formula 3 event is a free-standing, one-off race, Felix decided to carry his momentum further into the Tarzan corner and got himself ahead of third-placed Sainz Jr. by the exit of the turn.

The Spaniard, however, held firm on the inside and pushed Felix wide over the exit kerbs, forcing him to drop back extensively into ninth place. From there on, the race settled in, and with overtaking proving virtually impossible around Zandvoort, Felix ended up in the same position 25 laps later after having been stuck behind Michael Lewis' Prema Powerteam car for the duration of the race.

Daniel Juncadella won from pole position, ahead of fellow Prema Powerteam driver Raffaele Marciello on a day when the Italian outfit seemed to have a substantial edge on the rest of the field.

QUOTE | FELIX
"Ninth place obviously wasn't what I was aiming for having won this race last year, but the Masters of Formula 3 is all about winning or at least being on the podium; and I knew that going into Turn 1. That's why I decided to really go for it, and I was so close to getting around the outside of Carlos (Sainz Jr.) and into third. It really doesn't matter if you end up fourth, ninth or 13th here - there are no points to race for - and once we had completed the first lap, the race was pretty much settled.

"We are still lacking performance compared to Prema Powerteam, but Daniel (Juncadella) did a brilliant job and my warmest congratulations go out to him. We will have to work hard to catch them, but we will do our best and I have complete confidence in every single person at Mücke Motorsport."
