Felix overcomes Austrian jinx to score emphatic Race 1 win at Spielberg!

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 5
Venue:
Red Bull Ring (Austria) | Date: 1 June 2013 | Weather: Sunny

By Mattias Persson

Felix finally broke free from his Red Bull Ring jinx by scoring a dominant victory in the opening FIA Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend at the Austrian venue, controlling the event from lights to flag and throwing in a new lap record in the process.

Starting from the front row, Felix used another of his trademark getaways to immediately grab the lead from pole-sitter Daniil Kvyat. From there on, he was never headed, running away from his Carlin rival and the rest of the field at between 0.5-0.8 seconds per lap to eventually cross the line a crushing 14.3 seconds ahead of anyone else.

The victory marks Felix's third FIA Formula 3 European Championship triumph of the season, and sees him close the gap on championship leader Raffaele Marciello - who still managed to come home fourth from 13th on the grid.

Felix's benchmark lap time of 1m26.030s did not only mark the fastest tour of the race, but also erased the previous Red Bull Ring lap record held by Marciello by three tenths. On site to present Felix with the winners' trophy was Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr. Helmut Marko.

Race 2 will see Felix start from third on the grid, and gets underway this afternoon.

QUOTE | FELIX
"Absolutely amazing; finally a good result at this track, which I have always enjoyed so much! The difference in character between this and all the other races I've done at the Red Bull Ring could not have been bigger - this time around, everything went according to plan and exactly like I'd envisaged beforehand.

"I was able to grab the lead going into the first corner, and could see that I was quite a lot quicker than Daniil from the beginning. I built up a bit of a gap, and from there it was all just about not making any mistakes. Big, big thanks to the team for giving me a great car - hopefully we'll be just as strong this afternoon."
