New victory, new lap record - Felix dictates Red Bull Ring race two

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 5
Venue:
Red Bull Ring (Austria) | Date: 1 June 2013 | Weather: Cloudy

By Mattias Persson

Felix claimed his second FIA Formula 3 European Championship win in as many attempts this weekend when he controlled Saturday evening's Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring - and again bettered the all-time lap record established by himself as recently as this morning.

Felix passed slow-starting pole-sitter Daniil Kvyat on the run to the first corner, and then overtook Lucas Wolf - who had started from second - under braking for Turn 2 (Remus).

Once in the lead, things settled into the same pattern as this morning, with Felix gradually running away from the rest of the field to celebrate his fourth win of the campaign.

The race had to be stopped four laps before its scheduled end following a massive crash from Alex Lynn, in which the Briton's Prema Powerteam car was smashed to pieces after colliding with Fortec's Luis Derani.

Felix once again posted the fastest lap of the race, as he improved his own F3 lap record - set this morning - with a sublime 1m25.921s tour.

The final race of the weekend takes place tomorrow morning. Thanks to his two victories of today, Felix has lined himself up for "the impossible", as he bids to become the first driver in the history of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship to win all three races on the same weekend.

COMMENT | FELIX

"I really want to pay tribute to the guys at the team today; they have done a brilliant job since Brands Hatch to extract even more performance from an already strong car. Everyone at Mücke Motorsport deserves this success.

"I made a good start once again and took second from Kvyat, but then I had to slot in behind Lucas Wolf on the run to Turn 2. I was never confident that it would be easy to repeat our performance from this morning, but luckily I managed to grab the lead early on - and then it was actually all about controlling the pace.

"I feel incredibly strong around this track - we have always been fast here - and to head back to the hotel with two wins, two fastest laps and maximum points is just great. Having said that, however, this is not a championship for contemplation, and my mind is already firmly set on trying to repeat this in the final race tomorrow. It certainly won't be easy, but we have to go for the hat trick!"
