Felix makes history with Red Bull Ring victory clean-sweep!

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 5
Venue:
Red Bull Ring (Austria) | Date: 2 June 2013 | Weather: Drying

By Mattias Persson

Felix wrote history on Sunday morning by becoming the first driver in the existence of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship to complete a clean-sweep of weekend victories, claiming his third win in two days at the Red Bull Ring thanks to a highly spectacular overtaking move.

Maintaining his P3 grid slot into the first two corners, Felix was locked in a battle for the lead with championship rival Raffaele Marciello, Carlin's Nicholas Latifi and pole-sitter Daniil Kvyat going into Turn 3. Powering past Marciello thanks to a better exit, Felix found himself on the outside of Kvyat going into the ultra-fast Rauch left-hander, running side-by-side with the Russian for two consecutive corners before finally edging ahead and into the lead in spectacular fashion.

One lap later, the safety car was deployed due to a crash involving Måns Grenhagen, Dennis van de Laar, Tom Blomqvist and Jann Mardenborough. Once the debris had been cleared and racing resumed, Felix gave his opponents no chance of challenging his quest for victory, and eventually celebrated his historic third win this weekend having also posted another fastest lap.

With Marciello only managing sixth, Felix leaves Austria having reduced the Italian's championship lead by a massive 50 points, now sitting just 27.5 behind going into the second half of the season.

COMMENT | FELIX
"Absolutely amazing; this is the best weekend of my career to date. The key to this victory was the opening lap, and I knew that I had to grab any opportunity to get ahead before the race settled in. I managed to get past Raffaele at Turn 4, and then had a great fight with Daniil into the next sequence of corners. I needed to be determined to pull that move off around the outside, but I have had such a fantastic car this weekend and knew that I could do it. From there, it was fairly straightforward. Big, big thanks to the team for giving me the best car I've ever had."
