Throughout the autumn, www.felixracing.se will be running a series of articles where we look back at some of Felix's previous rivals - and chart where their careers have taken them by 2012. A new profile will be introduced every seven days. This week: Kevin Magnussen.
Raced against Felix: 2010 (ATS F3 Cup), 2011 (Masters of F3, Macau GP)
Today: Instant World Series by Renault front-runner during debut campaign
Denmark’s Kevin Magnussen is the son of former Formula 1 driver Jan Magnussen, and part of a very exclusive group of youngsters on McLaren’s talent development scheme on the road to Grand Prix racing.
Magnussen and Felix made their Formula 3 debuts at the same time – in the German ATS Formula 3 Cup in 2010 – and even though the two Scandinavians went separate ways from there (Felix stepped up to Formula 3 Euro Series, while Magnussen headed for the equivalent British championship), their paths would cross again in 2011.
When Felix scored his most significant victory to date in the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3, Magnussen was there to join him on the podium in third, and the duo would face each other once more in the Macau season-finale later in the year. They both shared the same destiny in the super-challenging street classic, making up the last row of the grid in Saturday’s Qualification Race after receiving punitive penalties for a practice incident, and Magnussen was lucky to leave the Asian event alive after a horrifying 270 km/h crash in the Sunday main race.
In 2012, Kevin Magnussen has made a serious and immediate impact as a regular front-runner in World Series by Renault, winning one of the races at Spa-Francorchamps and looking set for another triumph at the Hungaroring last weekend – only to retire from the lead due to an oil leak on the very final lap. Magnussen currently holds seventh overall in the championship standings, with two rounds to go of the campaign.
