Felix to start trio of Silverstone races from front two rows

FIA Formula 3 European Championship | Round 2
Venue:
Silverstone (Great Britain) | Date: 12 April 2013 | Weather: Dry (Q1) / wet (Q2)

By Mattias Persson

Felix overcame a sudden change in weather conditions to produce a series of front-running performances in FIA Formula 3 European Championship qualifying at Silverstone on Friday afternoon, and will start the weekend's trio of races from third, second and third place on the grid respectively.

After topping the preceding free practice session this morning, Felix immediately proved that his pace was no fluke as - despite being blocked on a sequence of fast laps - he went third fastest in the opening Q1 segment to position himself on the same place on the grid for tomorrow morning's Race 1. Harry Tincknell and Alex Lynn gave the British crowd something to cheer about by locking out an all-UK front row, Felix the only driver in the 28-car field to lap within half a second of the home favourites.

With the second-fastest times of Q1 setting up the grid for Race 2, Felix used a consistent series of efforts to end up second, which sees him share the front row of the grid with Tincknell tomorrow afternoon - the tall Englishman again grabbing pole position for the UK-based Carlin outfit. Championship leader Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) will line-up right behind Felix in both races.

While Q1 was run in dry conditions, the same could not be said for the second part of qualifying (Q2), as rain hit the Northamptonshire venue during the 15-minute break between sessions. With all drivers opting to head out on rain tyres, adaptability was at a premium following the previous slick-shod laps that had been produced.

The weather did little to upset Felix's plans, however, as he eventually claimed third once again - this time beaten only by Prema Powerteam duo Lynn and Marciello. The majority of the drivers, including Felix, used a late change to slick tyres to improve on a drying track.

Felix's three Mücke Motorsport team-mates endured a more challenging time at Silverstone. Mitch Gilbert - a former Formula Renault UK frontrunner - is set to line-up 17th, 19th and 23rd; American Michael Lewis will start from 20th, 18th and 13th slot; and Israel's Roy Nissany lines up 23rd, 25th and 25th for the three races.

QUOTE | FELIX
"That was exactly what we needed. The lack of slipstreaming during qualifying at Monza ruined that whole weekend, but now, we've got a much better situation as we head into the three races here at Silverstone. I ran into some traffic on my fastest laps of Q1, but - in all honesty - I don't think it cost me that much. Harry (Tincknell) was the fastest guy out there today, and all I can do is to congratulate him on a great session.

"We still have some more time to find, both in the car and in my own driving - particularly in Sector 1. In the fast corners and sectors, however, we are really, really competitive, which makes me confident of being able to fight for victory in all three races.

"The decision to head out on slicks in the dying moments of Q2 was my own, although the team obviously supported it. It was a very close call and it was really touch and go regarding what tyres to choose, but I wanted to do an effort on slicks - and fortunately, that proved to be the right thing. From a strategic point of view, it would obviously have been good if my team-mates were a little bit further up the grid to help out in the battle with the Prema Powerteam and Carlin cars, but I'm up for the challenge - and I will do everything I can to claim my first win of the year this weekend."
